Happy Sex Education for All Month!

When people ask me what I am passionate about, one of the first things that comes to mind is Education. Nelson Mandela said it best:

Now, to narrow that down, I would say that I get fired up about Language Learning and Sex Education. I think the benefits of learning a second language are super important in this ever-changing world, and really help differentiate tourists from people who want a deeper connection to the culture on their travels. I would highly recommend people learn, at least, the basic manners when traveling abroad.

Sex Education has always piqued my interest! Even as a little girl I was curious about why my older sister (nine years my senior) was going through changes, and at age 5 asked her “What is a period?”

It’s no secret that the USA Standard for Sex Education is a bit prude (‘Abstinence Only’ is not comprehensive), yet it seems to produce some of the biggest perverts.

I recently started listening to podcasts…I know! A little late to the game, but it has become a new medium of entertainment for a lot of people over the past few years. It’s hard for me to find something I feel speaks to me, so the first podcast I ever listened to was Pod Save the People. I read Deray McKesson’s book On the Other Side of Freedom and try to tune in regularly. When I came across Care. No Matter What. Podcast with Ethan Cox (Director of Development PPAZ Care No Matter What Podcast)I was hooked! For those of you who don’t know, I am a HUGE advocate for Planned Parenthood, and I wish they had a new episode more frequently than once a month.

In the May 2021 episode, Casey Scott Mitchell stated “In the United States, unintended Teen Pregnancies have gone down in recent years, which is due to Sex Educators and accessible birth control.” She goes on to say that “The UN has declared that Sexual and Reproductive Health is a Human Right.” In response to the host’s researched statistic that “Only 17 States require Sex Education to be Medically Accurate…” Maria Rodriguez says that this is “unacceptable and unjust”.

There is so much more good stuff in this podcast, but I won’t spoil it for you.

I applaud them! This podcast needs more clout. Please consider giving it a listen, and tell all your friends!
