Letting Go of Labels: Being true to your Self instead of ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’
As I have pursued following my passion over the years, I have moved around a lot. Whenever I go to a new place I undergo a constant ‘Interview process’ about my life. People want to know what I do for a living, where I’ve come from, what I am doing in a new place, whether or not I am married, or have kids, etc. The list goes on.
I decided at the young age of 21 that I did not want to follow society’s mold. At that time it was more acceptable among my peers. Almost ten years later, and a good amount of my friends are engaged, have gotten married, or already checked off those two boxes and are now procreating. It’s kind of scary!
I’m all for people doing what they love, but only if it is true to their Self, not because it’s “just what you do”.
When I started working for a new company about 15 months ago, I was asked all of these questions again, and it didn’t bother me. But when a coworker discovered I was 30, and had no husband or children, she judged me with her glare of disbelief.
It’s actually quite sad how wrapped up society is with labels. Even on social media, it has been ingrained in our daily lives to check everyone’s relationship status or where someone fits in the status quo.
I am tired of people dictating if I am ‘normal’ based on old norms.
Believe it or not, not everyone wants a traditional relationship or marriage. Some women choose not to have children, for whatever reason, and it’s fine.
As long as a person is decent and does not hurt others, please just let them live in peace.
We do not need your approval. There is nothing wrong with us. We do not believe in finding ‘the one’. We are complete as we are.
Just let your labels go.
