Modern Modesty and Double Standards

The only time I can recall ever seeing my mother naked was when I was about three or four years old, and she needed to take a shower, so she just put me in with her, and ‘killed two birds with one stone’. Even though she has three daughters, she never dressed in front of us.I don’t even remember seeing her in a swimsuit. Needless to say, my mother is very modest.

Quite the opposite of one of my good friends from Elementary school. I was at a sleepover at Michelle’s house in fourth grade, when I came out of the bathroom and I saw her mom walking down the hallway naked. I was shocked! My sheltered upbringing made me blush. I was programmed to hide my body, and don’t get me started on all the body shaming that followed.

As I grew older, my sisters and I were more and more open about our bodies. I mean three girls in one bedroom definitely created some new habits of seeing each other in close quarters. I always thought it was ironic that our modest mother ended up with “free-spirited” daughters.

When my sisters and I were young adults, we would have “Girls’ Night Out”, and sometimes we would walk home from the bars. So it’s no surprise, that we would have to empty our night of intoxicants in some stranger’s dimly lit driveway or behind a garbage can.

It dawned on me once that I had to be more careful, because my moment of relief could be misunderstood as indecent exposure. Then I quickly thought about how guys pee in public all of the time, and how I don’t feel like it should be frowned upon for women.

There are so many things that men have easier…and I’m tired of this. Luckily, we live in time where there is a device invented to assist women in peeing while standing up. If you don’t believe me, I encourage you to do some research.
